Objectification

Nordic sports are full of horrors, from the physical toll it takes on athletes' bodies to the abysmal wages to sexual objectification. There are some positives in Nordic sports, such as the camaraderie between athletes and the encouragement of social activism.

Eronen [80] and Bringmann [81] argue that phenomena must be verifiable by a variety methods, independent of the theory being observed. They also argue that these phenomena must impose constraints on theories. In light of this, a null outcome in an empirical study on the impact of objectification of women's cognitive performances should be viewed with potential importance.

The authors of this research based their manipulation on the interaction between sexual objectification (SSO) and Gay and Castano. However, they diluted this manipulation by telling only women that they could be filmed with a male gaze and that this video could be later viewed by men. This choice is not clear, given that the manipulation has been successful in the past. It also has a strong ecological validity. Future studies with sufficient power should examine if there is a difference between men and women in the impact of this kind of interpersonal objectification on cognitive performance.

Sexual Abuse

Some of the girls working on cam sites are minors. They often dress like little girls or schoolgirls, a popular porn genre, in order to act out paedophilic fantasies on men. They also use words like "working girl" or "girls that fuck" in order to make themselves seem younger.

Last weekend, the police in Sweden arrested 3 men on suspicion of raping an unidentified woman who was live streaming herself on Facebook. One witness immediately called the police after watching a video in which the men ripped off the woman's clothes and lied on top of her. She said that she could see that 60 other people were watching at the same time.

Dame Diana Johnson recently introduced the Sexual Exploitation Bill to parliament. This would bring in the Nordic Model, which recognises that prostitution is both a cause and a consequence of gender inequality. This webinar heard from both a sex-trade survivor and a trade union leader on why the movement should unambiguously support the bill.

Violence

Violence is a major problem in many Nordic countries, despite their high rankings on the World Economic Forum's index of gender equality and their high levels of legal and social empowerment for women. This week, at the UN's CSW67 summit in New York, the Nordic ministers for gender equality are discussing Nordic solutions to online gender-based violence.

Holma explains that in Finland, the lack of a public discussion makes it difficult to find solutions. But, he adds, there may be cultural reasons for the situation. "Finnish attitudes are quite traditional." In Iceland, 40% of women have experienced violence in their lifetime.
